EDITING 101

In this blog post, I would like to discuss how I edited the first part of my film. Since a lot of people were asking about, I thought that it was a good idea to dedicate a whole post to the editing.

To begin with, I layered the same clips to make it look as she was hallucinating. To do so, I copied the clip and then dragged one of them on top of the other. I also dragged the video a few seconds after the other one. I did this in order to get that dizzy feeling.

Now let's talk boy sound baby! (caught the song reference?)
Some of the sound effects that I used:
1) High Pitch sound
2) Drops Falling
Going chronologically, I first put the High pitch sound to convey that she's not aware of her surroundings. Then, I took the drops falling sound effect and used Garage Band to make it sound very echoey. This was a whole new experience for me because I had no idea how to use Garage Band and literally spend a whole day watching youtube tutorials and now I'm decent at it.
Those 2 sound are prominent throughout the whole scene.
For the voices in her head, I recorded my own voice on Garage Band saying quotes like "You're ugly, you're fat, you're not enough" one after the other as one big clip. Then I did the same than with the drop falling, I edited it and added echo but swifter so you could still understand what it was said. Once I imported the clip to i movie, I spliced them and placed them all spread but juxtaposing each other. I wanted to do this because it helps convey that her mind is full of negative thoughts and is overwhelmed.  (I named it voices Olivia)

After finishing this, it didn't sound as I wanted it to sound. I wanted to sounded very busy but even with the different voices talking, there was something lacking. I remembered that for a past project for this same class I had to record people whispering and I still had that clip so I used it and everything started to come up the way that I wanted.

Once she let's the bottle fall to the floor. I stopped all these sounds and the layering of the video. Why? Because I wanted to emphasize that she's now unconscious and so the sound perspective stopped as well. Because there's a lot that was cut all of a sudden I wanted to make it smooth so I gradually ended the high pitch sound effect with an option that iMovie offers. (I named it Ringing)

Because the majority of the sounds I added and are actually part of the clip, I also added the know on the door I just recorded myself knocking on the door without editing any of it.

And this is how it came up!

And to finalize, the editing of the second half was fairly easy. I just put it all the clips together and made it look fluent. The only thing I added, was sound effect of nature and birds to help mesh together the visual and auditive narrative.
I also added the credits with a duration of 4 seconds.
Well, that is it for my editing! Can't believe I finished my film opening... Times flies, don't you think?
